Kinsale College Green Campus organiser, Donal Chambers, decided to start a new initiative this year, Kinsale Green Week. With Transition Town Kinsale he is delighted that the Kinsale Patrick’s Day Parade Committee have decided on the theme ‘Think Green’ for this year’s Parade. The Parade, which will start at 3.00pm will weave its way along The Glen, Pearse Street, Barry’s Place and the Pier Road to the reviewing stand near the Pier Head. Since its revival in 2012 the Parade, and the Maritime Parade the evening of the 16th, have been key dates in Kinsale’s Calendar, for residents and visitors alike. The unique Maritime Parade will take place at the harbour on Saturday, March 16th and again this year you are promised a stunning firework display with boats beautifully lit up under the night sky.
Watch out around town for the Shamrock Planters, provided by Kinsale Men’s Shed. All are welcome to take some shamrock for their button hole, lapel or cap!
Events planned for Green Week include lectures and seminars at Kinsale College. These are open to all and presenters include Mark Boyle, also known as Moneyless Man (he will be talking about his new book - living without electricity); Dr Tara Shine, environmental scientist, Director of Change by Degrees and Co-Founder of Plastic Free Kinsale, and Olivia Ormston and Margaret Thuillier, who set up Zero Waste Kinsale, part of TTK’s Waste Reduction Forum. Olivia and Margaret will also be going to Kinsale Community School, while Thomas Reidmuller of Kinsale College will be guiding the pupils of St Multose national School around the gardens of the college during the week. Dr Tara Shine will also present a talk on her recent expedition to Antarctica with Homeward Bound, the global leadership programme for women in science, in the Carmelite Friary, Kinsale on Wednesday 20th March 2019 at 7.30pm.
The week will finish with a gathering at Kinsale’s Community Orchard at Sáile, on Sunday March 24th at 2.00pm. Facilitated by Transition Town Kinsale, Kinsale College and Kinsale Men’s Shed there will be planting workshops; building a bee hotel workshop and if the weather is kind some music and light refreshments! All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.
If you have a Green Event you would like to run let us know and we’ll include.
If your business would like to part of the Refill Movement let us know – i.e. you are happy to fill a water bottle for someone!
